“We don’t want to leave you like this,” Stella forced her words out quickly.

“I’m fine. You can go.”

“We’re sorry,” Lainey urged.

“I’m sorry,” Stella overenunciated.

“It’s fine. See you later,” I offered gently as I looped around the dining room to the back corner where all the boxes were neatly stacked.

“Hey, babe!” Blaine grinned as he entered the room with a bottle of liquor tucked under his arm. “I thought you went to take another hide-and-seek nap.”

“No,” I barked. “I went to breathe for a fucking second.”

“Whoa,” he muttered as he held his hands up in surrender. “No need to get hostile now.”

I closed my eyes as I pinched the bridge of my nose. With a sharp inhale, I counted to three before I exhaled so hard my nostrils flared. “I know you invited all these people to my house, Blaine. Now please get them out.”

“Wha-” Blaine looked around, confused. “Really? The party just got started!”

“There is no party!” I exclaimed. “Out! Now!”

Blaine’s lips bowed as he considered my words. After a moment, he set the bottles down on the table and approached me, spreading his arms wide as he got closer. “It sounds like you need a Blainey-Bear hug.”

“I fucking do not,” I shrieked as I slammed my foot down. Reaching out, I slammed my hands against his chest and shoved him back as hard as I could. “Get out!” I screamed before I shoved him again. “Get!” The words came out more demanding with each step I took as I pummeled my fists against him. “Out!”

“Oh, shit!” Blaine muttered as he stumbled back, trying to regain his footing.

As I delivered the final blow, putting both of my hands in the center of his chest, I bent my elbows and shoved him even harder. “Candi, stop!” Lainey screeched.

Blaine’s feet flew out from under him as he hurtled toward the ground, his fall broken only by the back of his skull hitting the edge of the counter. His body went limp as he settled against the tile floor and dark crimson liquid began to drip along the cupboard door.

“Shit!” Stella gasped. She exchanged a terrified look with Lainey for a moment before springing to action. Cupping her hands around her mouth, she screamed into the living room, “Call 9-1-1!”

Soon, all my friends from school were crowding the doorway, trying to figure out what happened. Lainey was on her knees next to Blaine, tilting his head back and forth as she begged him to respond to her.

I was in a daze. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. It hurt to move, and I still didn’t want to breathe.

I reached up and clutched the iron sword pendant my father gave me, twisting it between my fingers and hoping none of this was real.

“Did anyone call?” Stella screeched as she frantically waved her hands at the stunned faces blocking the doorway.

“I’m talking to the dispatcher now!” a small voice squeaked from behind the crowd.

“Great!” Stella gasped.

“He’s awake!” Lainey squealed. “Blaine!” She squeezed his cheeks between her hands.
